The Sudanese Government stressed it was ready "to co-operate with all parties" as the latest force Commander of the overstreched, under-staffed and underfunded African Union Peacekeeping mission arrived in Khartoum.
General Martin Agwai, from Nigeria has replaced another Nigerian at the head of the 7,000 strong AU mission operating in the famine stricken and war torn Darfur region.
The peacekeepers have been struggling to pacify the area, where over 200,000 people have died and 2,5 million fled from their homes since 2003, when local rebels took up arms against Khartoum.
It is unlikely this move will change the facts on the ground as the summer heat builds. The changes the interntaional community need to take in Darfur are more than a mere change of figurehead - if we are to prevent total genocide.
